The day the Zombies came: Melbourne Zombie Shuffle 2010

Yesterday we participated in the Melbourne Zombie Shuffle. It's a kind of flash mob. A fun event where people dress up as zombies for the day and march through the city. It has no overt political focus, although I do think it is a kind of social commentary. It could perhaps be seen as a kind of spontaneous performance art.

The shuffle gave us a fun opportunity to do some special make up fx for the day. This year we spent a morning on preparation: one of the advantages of Alana and I have doing special make up fx. Although one of the best features of the event is the DIY zombie fx done by participants that showcases great imagination and character creation.

Alana's dad Mike was also on hand as a photographer for the day, which turned out really great as we weren't worried about lugging about a camera. Hopefully we'll also get some action shots from him soon. The event also allowed a field test for how long a make-up lasts. After four hours our character make ups still had good gorey gooey goodness, although potentially could have had a few touch ups at the two hour mark.

  1. Haha, you guys look great! I saw a few zombies in the city yesterday and was wondering if we'd see you. Looks like it was fun!

  2. It certainly was fun! It might have been tricky to spot us because the turn out was huge this year. I reckon there must have been over five hundred zombies shuffling this time. Maybe close to a thousand even... Hopefully we'll have some action shots from Alana's dad sometime soon.
